George Town, Grand Cayman




George Town, Grand Cayman, is the capital of the Cayman Islands, in the British West Indies, with a population of a little over 20,000 people.

George Town is the epicenter of the financial industry for the Cayman Islands, with over 600 banks located in the city.  There are several large financial institutions that have large buildings and offices in the city, however, many businesses are registered in George Town but physically located outside of the islands.

The city of George Town has become popular over the years for the cruise ships that pull into its port.  Aside from the finance industry, tourism is the largest contributor to the local economy in the city and caters to a tourist and visitor demographic.  Since George Town is so popular with cruise ships, certain days can be very crowded and congested.

Restaurants & Dining

George Town has become a very popular tourist destination on the island, and thus, many restaurants can be found in the city.  They variety ranges from fast food to a Hard Rock cafe and a Margaritaville that is located within one of the shopping plazas.

Shopping

The Cayman Islands are one of the wealthiest countries in the world (per capita) and so you will find that the prices on the island are typically higher than other tourist destinations in the Caribbean.  It should also be noted, that unlike some other vacation spots like Mexico and Jamaica, haggling over price is not a common practice in the Cayman Islands and George Town.  More often than not, the price you see on the tag is the price that you will pay.

Getting Around

There are plenty of transportation options that are available in George Town.  Taxis, shuttles, and buses are all plentiful and can be called usually within just a few minutes.
